2018 was a year of change and blessings. Change in that I had the honor of working with five new (to me) theater companies over the course of the year. Blessings in that I was welcomed and supported by every company I worked with. Without exception, all of these companies are dedicated to making great theatre.
I started off the year with an (almost) all woman DROOD at Marin On Stage at Marin On Stage. This was a cast of many of my favorite Bay Area actresses and I made some great new friends as well. Then it was on to the competely all woman cast of JCS at Ray Of Light (#shesus) where I was able to focus just on video engineering while watching a truely inspired company with a mission at work.
In May I had my Portland OR theater introduction as stage manager for a concert version of MASS with Stumptown Stages, a super exciting musical theater company that I have continued with, doing projections for DREAMGIRLS, production management for another JCS and directing URINETOWN in the spring. My Portland area directorial debut came in October with SILENT SKY at Beaverton Civic Theatre. If I may say so, SILENT SKY was a beautiful show, the cast was a joy to work with and we were rewarded with some very kind feedback by the community.
From Beaverton it was straight back to Alameda CA to start rehearsals for HAND TO GOD at Alterena Playhouse. We are still in process (HTG opens in January) but from day one I have been impressed with the cast's fearlessness and talent as we tackle this viciously funny and shockingly honest play. Between all of this we also cast some super talent for URINETOWN (at Stumptown) and CRIMES OF THE HEART (Ross Valley Players), two shows I am really looking forward to.
The joy and dedication I found in each of these communites has been heartenting and inspiring. Working with so many different theatre companies in one year has also been a lesson in learning to look for the differences that make each company unique and to utilize those differences to make each production special. On to 2019!
